Teaching and Pedagogical Philosphy

Joseph has been teaching piano for over 15 years. Many of his students are trained using the syllabus from the Royal Conservatory of Music (RCM), participating in piano examinations. Students are encouraged to perform as often as possible. He encourages all students to participate in the NS Kiwanis Music Festival, Scotia Fest, and other opportunities. He hosts regular studio recitals to allow students to perform for friends and family. Joseph works with children and adults and always makes sure students and parents are on the same page with expectations and growth. Although encouraged, students are not obligated to take piano exams or perform and can study at their own pace and comfort level.

During the covid 19 pandemic Joseph adapted to teaching online. It has been so successful that many of his students have continued online since to avoid traffic, on bad weather days, or when they have moved away. Joseph actively teaches students living in China, Kuwait, and Toronto.

Joseph encourages students to collaborate as often as possible to develop the skills of listening, supporting, and reacting to other musicians. His students have performed piano duets, played for voice or strings, and more.

Joseph teaches in both Halifax and Dartmouth (and online!) and currently has some (but limited) space for new students. Reach out if you would like to start your piano journey today!
